Several honored at Arc of Shelby County dinner

The Arc of Shelby County, Inc. held its annual meeting on Sept. 24 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Shelbyville and handed out several awards.

Nearly 100 people attended and listened to guest speakers Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) and Jeff Mohler, Special Olympics Indiana president and CEO.

The following were honored for their service:

n Best Teacher – Monica Douglas of Shelby Eastern Schools

n Best Education Professional – Michelle Neff of Shelby Eastern Schools

n Best Special Olympics Coach – Tammy Dahl

n Best Special Education Staff Person – Toni Garrett, Shelbyville Central Schools Especially Kidz program

n Best Distinguished Person – Susan Smith of Shelbyville Central Schools

n Best Distinguished Family – Patrick and Patricia Trefun

n Best Aktion Club Member – Samantha Burchett

n Best Livable Community Visionary – Shelbyville Mayor Tom DeBaun

In addition, two special olympians were named Athletes of the Year. They are:

n Male Athlete of Year – John Wheeler

n Female Athlete of Year – Alisha Monreal

Awards also were presented to Special Olympics teams that won state tournaments. Those teams are 2018 Shelby County Colts (flag football), 2018 Shelby County Unified Cubs (softball), 2019 Shelby County Cardinals (basketball), and 2019 Shelby County Magic (basketball).

The Arc of Shelby County’s officers are Don Collins (president), Holly Forville (vice-president), Mickey Pottenger (treasurer) and Angela Woollen (secretary). The board of directors are Travis Tucker, Samantha Burchett, Shane Roell and Todd Forville.
