Flat Rock youth wins state contest

Four Hoosier sewing enthusiasts won first place at the Indiana state “Make It With Wool” competition recently held at the Indiana State Fair.

The Indiana State Fair contest is sponsored by the Indiana Sheep Association and affiliated with the National Make It With Wool sewing competition.

The competition showcases and promotes the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics, yarns, and fibers and encourages personal creativity in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, and other needlework arts.

All contestants must select, construct, and model their own garment(s) made from more than 60 percent wool content.

The stage winners by age division were:

n Pre-Teen Division – Josslyn Massey of Zionsville

n Junior Division – Madeline Douglas of Flat Rock

n Senior Division – Olivia Lexie South of Marshall

n Adult Division – Julie Jahn of Decatur

The junior and senior category winners will represent the state of Indiana at the National Make It With Wool Contest at the American Sheep Industry annual convention in Scottsdale, Arizona, in January 2020.

The adult winner will compete nationally via video and photographs in late 2019. Adult winners will be announced at the same time.

The national contest is sponsored by the American Wool Council, the American Sheep Industry, and American Sheep Industry Women.

The pre-teen category does not compete at the national level.
